Who are we?
The cider house: the house and the family
Gaztañaga is a cider house and grill that opened its doors in 1989. It was Joxe Ángel Gaztañaga who started the cider house and restaurant business following in the footsteps of his father Ángel, who already in 1975 made cider for his own consumption in the tolare (press). Maria Ángeles Garmendia joined the business to take charge of the kitchen in the house. Today it is the two of them and their son Axier who work with enthusiasm and effort in the day to day of the house. On the first floor we have the Cider House and the Cider Cellars, on the second floor we have the restaurant-grill and the terrace. Two different ways to enjoy Gaztañaga.
The building that originally served to protect the grass and the livestock in the house, is located in the Buruntza neighborhood, belonging to the Andoain municipality. This small municipality of around 14,000 inhabitants is well known in the Leitzaran Valley. A beautiful green valley, with an old train track that crosses it from north to south, from Andoain to Pamplona, a 68 km path that today can be covered on foot or by bicycle, along the banks of the Leitzaran river. Perfect for a good walk before getting your strength back at the Gaztañaga Cider House.
Andoain has always been a town with a great cider-making tradition. Formerly, each neighborhood had a community wine press that they shared so that the inhabitants of each hamlet could make their own cider for their consumption. Cider was a great food that could not be missing in the houses and farmhouses of the area.
